Discover Worcester, Massachusetts the heart of the Commonwealth.  Worcester is a city in Central Massachusetts that was better known for it's industrial contributions of the past.  It is now being reinvented as a center for education and life sciences as well as it's strengths of manufacturing and transportation. 

Worcester City HallThe City of Worcester was incorporated in 1848 growing from a town to a major industrial hub.  Centrally located and accessible via the rail system the growth brought many immigrants and is why there is such a broad range of cultures.  Worcester is the seat of Worcester County in Central Mass and is the second largest city in New England behind Boston with approximately 175,000 residents.

Worcester and Central Mass are also home to 12 colleges including Worcester Polytechnic Institute, UMass Medical School and College of the Holy Cross.  This provides for a vibrant influx from people all over the world.  This concentration of educational institutions brings innovation and companies.  Worcester also benefits from a low cost of living and a strong knowledge based workforce which is so important today.

As a tourist there are countless attractions in Central Massachusetts.  Full of historic building and sites history lovers will no doubt want to visit the Worcester Historical Museum to get their bearings on not just the many inventions that were made here but also a sense of Worcester's place in history.  The Higgins Armory Museum is also a unique attraction not to be missed.

If nature is your game there are many attractions focused on the Blackstone River and Quinsigamond Lake which are right here.  White Water rafting and a variety of park attractions like Blackstone Valley are close by.  Worcester County is a mix of both the city appeal of a major city like Worcester with simpler towns with lots of open spaces.

The DCU center offers all sorts of events depending on the time of year including being the home of the Worcester Sharks.  You don't have to go into Boston to enjoy quality sports entertainment.  In the winter you can see the Worcester Sharks the AHL affiliate for the National Hockey League San Jose Sharks.  In the summer Worcester has its own baseball team the Worcester Tornadoes who are part of the CAN-AM league.  They play in Fitton Field at Holy Cross.

Other venues to check out for entertainment are the Palladium, Mechanics Hall, the Hanover Theatre and the Massachusetts Symphony Orchestra that plays at both or at its own Tucker Hall.  Be sure to check out the restaurants on Shrewsbury Street and the Canal District as you tour around the city.
